Pinterest is Transforming social media: From Scrolling to Creating
The design of social media is to keep people on its site for as long as they can. But Pinterest is going about it differently. In its September 1, 2026 update, the platform shared how teens are using Pinterest to discover ideas, save inspiration, and then apply that inspiration in the real world.

Is Pinterest becoming the opposite of endless scrolling?
Teen usage of Pinterest is not just about endless scrolling, according to Pinterest. When it comes to saving content, teens save 64% more, searching for ideas 44% more, and organizing boards 68% more than other age groups. According to the platform, this is “doing, not scrolling,” in which users discover something useful within the app and then exit for the user to experience.
What is driving teens to turn to Pinterest for ideas?
Pinterest offers teens an opportunity to explore things without having to be constantly posting about themselves all the time. Over 77% of active teen users use Search bar to discover interests. Drawing references, anime styles, sketch tutorials, photography poses, bedroom decor and phone wallpapers are some of the most popular searches. Teens are also looking for concepts that enable them to make their environments more personal and creative
What makes Pinterest different from other social platforms?
Pinterest claims that it’s about inspiration, not public performance. Private-only accounts are available for users aged 13-15 years, and are private by default for teen accounts. Only mutual followers can send and receive messages and comments are disabled by default for teen users. This takes some of the stress and comparison that can be attributed to conventional social media.
What does this mean for Creators?
Pinterest’s model is another path for content to be successful for creators. Creators can make content that captures an idea which people want to save, try or recreate, rather than creating something to garner views. Tutorials, DIY, fashion inspiration, art references, recipes, room ideas and more useful visual content can make a Pin an action.
Final Thoughts
Pinterest is proving that social media doesn’t always have to be an opportunity for you to stay online longer. It’s increasing emphasis on inspiration and creativity provides users with motivation to take ideas off the screen. For creators that may involve creating content people don’t simply observe, but use.
