What Happens When YouTube Viewers Choose Their Own Algorithm?
YouTube’s ability to tailor videos for users on the Home page relies on recommendations, which suggest a video that the viewer might want to watch. YouTube is, however, experimenting with another concept: giving some viewers the choice about what to see in their feed. It says that in this experiment, we’re doing what we call “Your custom feed.”

What Are YouTube’s New Custom Feeds?
On 27 May, 2026, YouTube launched the experiment “Your custom feed”. The eligible viewers will be able to place the “Your custom feed” chip at the top of the Home page and type in a query to find what they’re searching for. They can also select from a list of suggestions, and then YouTube will generate a special feed based on that.
How Can Viewers Personalize What They Watch?
The feature is providing a new means of expression for viewers to indicate their interests. They can edit the prompt at any time to produce a different version of that prompt after creating a feed. This allows viewers to not just use their current recommendations to find an interest they are interested in but also to explore new interests.
It is simple to understand for parents. We all have experienced a situation where we were watching YouTube with a child and one video led to another and yet another. Discovery could feel more focused if it was more intentional to request specific content. But YouTube has not advertised it as a parental control setting, so it should not be viewed as such.
Could Custom Feeds Change Video Discovery?
If Custom Feeds is successful, another path to viewing videos might be available for viewers. Viewers can describe what they are interested in, instead of just reacting to the suggestions already on Home. However, this test certainly does not imply that viewers are assuming full responsibility for YouTube’s recommendations.
How Can Creators Adapt to More Personalized YouTube Feeds?
YouTube has not introduced any special YouTube strategy or ranking rule specifically for Custom Feeds. So, creators should continue to work on topics that are clear, content that helps to the audience who actually wants the content. Ytviews may also be a part of a creators overall channel growth strategy if they are more interested in their channel growth.

Final Thoughts
YouTube isn’t giving a 100% say in their algorithm. Rather, it’s trying out a means for some viewers to directly describe what they want to find out. As it continues, it might help create a more targeted discovery experience on YouTube, allowing users to have more influence on the content seen in their feed.
