Twitter which is now known as X, it used to be most active social media app in India . It gained attention among millions of users who shared  news, opinions and trends. However, in past few years, the platform has observe straight decline in its engagement . This shift is caused by multiple factors that have changed the perspective of people and how they use the app.

Re-Branding Confusion

The sudden change from Twitter to X created the air of confusion among many users in India. Twitter had created a strong name over the past years, with its legendary bird logo and special culture. The re-branding ruined this emotional bond. Many people were not able accept the change or relate to the new name or design, and some even felt difficult to find the app in stores while searching for “Twitter.” This  declined new users and made old users feel disconnected from the new platform.

 

Paid Features and Policy Changes

Changes in policy also played an important role. Earlier, properties like blue tick verification acted as aid to build credibility and were free. Now, they are accessible through paid subscriptions like X Premium, which cannot be afford by everyone, also the algorithm started recommending paid users, making it hard for regular accounts to get visibility. As a result, many small creators, journalists, and individuals stopped posting with great intrest.

 

Growth of Local Platforms

India’s social media scene has progressed very quickly . Platforms like Koo got a great popularity by providing content in different Indian languages and focusing on local audiences. For multiple users in smaller towns, these apps felt more easier to use than X, which even provided them visibility unlike X. This factor was one of the major reason that has taken away a large section of X’s active base.

Technical and User Experience Issues

After the rebranding, there were lot of glitches, updates were very slow  and it reduced content moderation all these problems were frequently reported by the users. The feed were only crowded with ads and promotional posts which affected experience of users. Many users switched to different  platforms like Instagram Threads and LinkedIn which gave  cleaner interfaces.

 

Decline in Meaningful Conversations

In the past, Twitter was popular for its debates, breaking news and important discussions. Today it is totally flooded with spam activity, useless ads and unworthy content. This decline the engagement and forced serious users to switch to different platforms.

 

Conclusion

The downfall in Twitter (X) users in India is all because of brand confusion updates, policy changes, endless competition with better features , technical issues. To come back in the community , X must rebuild trust, improve platform stability and bring great engaging feature.
